I know it’s a bit outside our area but there’s an event happening this weekend that I just had to draw to readers’ attention – the Teddington River Festival and RNLI Station Open Day.

I have to confess that I’m not a big fan of politicians. Most of them seem to delight in avoiding answering straight questions and a significant number probably wouldn’t know the truth if it hit them in the face.

Double trouble: Alan, left, and Mort Smith.

Brother, this was great

It was well worth the wait. My brother Alan and I finally took Terra Nova out for a run two weekends ago and it was wonderful to be back out on the water.

Huzzah! I’m delighted to learn that the Environment Agency has signed up with a company who, for a trial period, will help to enforce the mooring regulations on parts of the Thames including Walton and Weybridge.

The intrepid crew will be paddling 116 miles along the Thames to raise money for two good causes.

I always enjoy turning the spotlight on some of the wonderful things river people undertake for charity – and this week is no exception.

Himalyan Balsam can quickly stifle other plants along riverbanks.

Invaders from foreign lands have generally not proved to be much of a problem for us British since the arrival of William the Conqueror more than 1,000 years ago.

Ack-ack attack: The journey home from a dance at the Walton Playhouse in September 1940 proved quite hairy for Jimmy, left, and Billy Brant, but fortunately they lived to tell the tale.

But brothers Billy and Jeremy and their brave young aunt were undaunted by German pilot’s attack

Not missed: Boat skippers will be delighted to see the back of the old bridges whose supporting piers made navigating around the bend in the river a tricky business.

Bridge tops out as boats pass under

Today’s the day for the final ‘topping out’ ceremony at the new Walton Bridge – and thanks to the organisational efforts of our local boat clubs, there will be a sail past to mark the event along with a number of other events.

I haven’t written about the progress on the construction of the new river crossing at Walton for a while and I just wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate the builders and Surrey County Council for the impressive way the building work has gone.

Eve is rowing old gracefully

I’m delighted to record that Eve Gould from Weybridge Ladies’ Rowing Club celebrated her 86th birthday earlier this month by heading out on the river as the number three in a quad – just as she has done so many times before over the years.
