“The River Thames is one of Spelthorne borough’s greatest assets – and we simply don’t make enough of that fact.” Those were the words of former major and borough councillor Judith Wood-Dow of Staines as she prepared to board the traditional shallop, Jubilant, at the Thames Lodge hotel a couple of weeks back.
A good move for River Day
The new Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Caroline Spencer, is taking a novel approach to the annual River Day ritual this year by moving it from its traditional spot in September – and reversing the direction so that the procession begins in Staines and ends in Sunbury.

Spelthorne’s annual River Day takes place on Saturday, September 6 when the borough’s mayor will be rowed up the Thames from Sunbury to Staines in a grand procession aimed at raising money for charity.
